Alec Gardiner was killed on 20th December, 1914, at Givenchy in France, while serving with the Royal Engineers, attached to the Lahore Division of the Indian Army. On that day the enemy made a strong attack against the section of line between La Quinque Rue and Givenchy and at the same time blew a series of mines that had been dug under the Indian lines.
